MANKATO, Minn. — Northern Soy Marketing (NSM), a farmer-led committee comprised of soybean inspection committees from Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, will conduct a meeting with farmers in January. “One of NSM’s goals is to increase global demand for northern soybeans,” said NSM Chairman Patrick O’Leary, a Benson, Minn., farmer. “We continue to encourage consideration of Pacific soybeans and soybean meal.” The northwest is a likely option. Members of the delegation include Nebraska farmer and NSM board member Eugene Gehring, University of Minnesota researcher Seth Knaib, and poultry nutritionist Robert Swick. The group will begin meetings in Hanoi before heading to Ho Chi Minh City and Cambodia.
“We are excited to meet with international buyers and strengthen our relationships with them through one-on-one conversations,” said Goering. “It adds an important level of trust that cannot be built through a video screen from across the ocean. Vietnam is the world’s sixth largest pork producer, fourth largest aquaculture producer, and 13th largest soybean consumer. Southeast Asia is the second largest market for U.S. soybean imports.
While in the country, the delegation will meet with feed mill executives, nutritionists and buyers. Customer visits include Dabaco, which focuses on animal feed, poultry farming and food processing, and Vinh Hoan/Feed One, which specializes in the cultivation and processing of frozen fish products. Seminars with presentations highlighting NSM’s messages will be held in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, inviting feed mill industry representatives and local media.
“Everything we do is geared toward our mission of increasing profitability for U.S. soybean producers,” O’Leary said. “These overseas missions are an integral part of our organization.”
To conclude the mission in Southeast Asia, part of the delegation will head to Cambodia for feed mill visits and seminars in collaboration with the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH).
