NVIDIA on Tuesday announced Project GR00T, a general-purpose foundational model for humanoid robots. The company also announced a new computer for humanoid robots called Jetson Thor, along with upgrades to its Isaac robot platform.
“Building foundational models for general-purpose humanoid robots is one of the most exciting problems to solve in AI today. Leading roboticists around the world are working to take a giant leap forward toward artificial general-purpose robotics. The technology is coming together to make that possible,” said Founder and CEO Jensen Huang. he said in an NVIDIA press statement.
GR00T stands for “Generalist Robot 00 Technology,” and robots built on this platform could potentially be able to understand natural language and imitate movements by observing them. NVIDIA claims such robots can quickly learn coordination, dexterity, and other skills to move, adapt, and interact in the real world.
Jetson Thor for humanoid robots
Jetson Thor is based on NVIDIA’s Thor system-on-a-chip, a computing platform that aims to be able to perform complex tasks as well as interact “securely and naturally” with both people and machines. Features a modular architecture optimized for performance, power, and size.
NVIDIA is working with humanoid robotics companies such as Agility Robotics, Apptronik, Boston Dynamics, Figure AI, Fourier Intelligence, Sanctuary AI, Unitree Robotics, and XPENG Robotics to develop comprehensive AI platforms.
“We are at a turning point in history, where human-centered robots like Digit are poised to change work forever. Modern AI is accelerating development and robots like Digit are poised to touch every aspect of daily life. In partnership with NVIDIA, we are partnering with NVIDIA to bring computing, simulation tools, machine learning environments, and other We are excited to invest in the necessary infrastructure,” said Jonathan Hurst, co-founder and chief robotics officer at Agility Robotics. said in a press statement.
NVIDIA’s Isaac Platform
NVIDIA also announced significant upgrades to the Isaac robotics platform that powers GR00T. The company says the Isaac tool used by Gr00T can create a new base model for any robot in any environment. These tools include Isaac Lab for reinforcement learning and his OSMO orchestration service. The company also announced the Isaac Manipulator and Isaac Perceptor. As the name suggests, these are pre-trained models, libraries, and reference hardware that enable robots to run.
