Ms Jo Townsend has been appointed chief executive of Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation, the Crown body that manages the NZ$70 billion NZ Super Fund.
Guardians chairman John Williamson said in a press release: She is an experienced CEO with her 30 year career in the Australian investment sector. Jo most recently led the transformation of Funds SA, a public sector fund and A$40 billion institutional investor, overseeing significant growth in the organization’s capabilities.
“Joe is a proven people leader with a track record of developing high-performing teams, attracting talent and building strong stakeholder relationships.
“As the first externally appointed CEO since Adrian Orr in 2007, Jo will bring a fresh industry perspective and a wealth of experience to the Guardian. We are confident that she will lead us into the future. I believe he is the right person to do so.”
Ms Townsend said: “I’m really excited to be joining Guardians. The NZ Super Fund is known and respected globally as a high-performance institutional investor. Guardians’ purpose is to deliver great benefits to all New Zealanders. It is a sustainable investment that will deliver sustainable investment and underlines the importance of the Fund to this country.”
Mr. Townsend is expected to begin his new role in April 2024. Paula Steed will continue as acting CEO until then.
Mr. Townsend served as CEO of Funds SA from 2015 to 2023. Prior to 2015, he held various positions at REST Industry Super, one of Australia’s largest pension funds, including General Manager, Investments and Acting Chief Operating Officer. Early in his career, he was responsible for investment operations at NGS Super, Retirement Benefit Fund, Value Capital Management and Rothschild Australia Asset Management. Mr. Townsend holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Finance from the University of Technology Sydney, is a Chartered Investment Management Analyst and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She is also an independent member of the Australian Olympic Foundation’s Investment Advisory Committee.
