Pamplin’s DEIB office will be featured in the magazine’s April issue. In 2023, the office will foster a sense of belonging among students and stakeholders using inclusive and innovative practices to enhance the human experience and develop culturally knowledgeable community leaders. In recognition of our efforts, we received the Inspiring Programs in Business Award.
The Inspiring Programs in Business Award recognizes educational institutions that are committed to inspiring the next generation of business leaders through impactful teaching, innovative teaching methods, groundbreaking research, and successful programs and initiatives. To do. This award recognizes institutions that actively encourage students from underrepresented groups to develop successful careers in business.
In collaboration with Virginia Tech’s Office of Global Education and the Steger Center for International Scholarship in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, the first group of DEIB Around the World students set out on a 10-day journey in May 2023. Twenty-six undergraduate students from a variety of backgrounds participated. This initiative contributes to Panpurin’s commitment to fostering global perspectives, cultural exchange, and inclusive excellence. The university’s commitment to collaborating with international partners to provide enriching opportunities for students to broaden their horizons and develop a deeper understanding of issues of cultural humility, inclusivity, and global diversity. has been strengthened.
“I am extremely grateful and honored to be a part of the pilot program for this program,” said Laura Powell Portillo, an undergraduate student studying business information technology and finance. “Her 10 days in Switzerland and Italy gave me a deep understanding of the importance of international business and tourism. This experience allowed me to broaden my cultural horizons and learn from people who have achieved great international success. is completed.”
The program aligns with Goal 3 of Pamplin’s Strategic Initiative 5.6 Implementation Plan, “Building Inclusive Model Communities,” while strengthening students’ cultural humility and practical skills in the context of global business. , expanding international access for underrepresented populations. This is one of the first programs of its kind to provide underrepresented students with the opportunity to travel abroad without the financial stress. All program costs were covered by the students, including airfare, accommodation, meals, and passport fees.
The program also supports the objectives of Virginia Tech Advantage, a university-wide, multi-year initiative to dramatically expand support for students with financial need. As students gain study abroad experiences and faculty build new programs, universities can expand their impact on a global scale.
