NEW BERLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) – A local thrift store is on a mission to help local shelter dogs find forever homes.
Since opening in 2019, Paws In Thrift Boutique in New Berlin has become a staple in fundraising efforts for the nonprofit organization Canine Cupids.
Volunteer Clodagh McGinnis said: “COVID-19 has been tough. We almost shut down, but we managed to bounce back.” “It’s my passion. I love it. It’s amazing. All the people you meet are just as amazing as the dogs.”
McGinnis often runs the store at 16040 West National Ave. and helps sell donated pet supplies to raise money for Canine Cupids.
“We also have a large selection of dog clothes, most of which are new or in good condition,” she says.
“Everything is probably a quarter of the new price, and some of it is actually new.”
From toys to boxes and even things for humans, the store was established to fund the nonprofit’s foster care program.
“All they need is a couch and someone to love their dog and move their dog,” McGinniss said.
Last year, Canine Cupids adopted 60 dogs from local shelters, including Aggie, a 5-year-old bulldog mix who was found wandering the streets alone.
“She’s blind, but that doesn’t stop her,” said adoptive mother Ashley Brockman. “She loves people. She’s not shy about asking everyone she meets for a pet or a treat for her. She’s a really good dog.”
Brockman has been fostering Aggie since October, and all expenses were covered by Cianie Cupid.
“That makes it so much easier, especially if you have a large dog, you don’t have to pay for those costs. When you have a large dog, you have to pay for food, you have to pay for vet bills, all of that. “It’s really not a burden on me at all. I give her space and love and the rest is all,” she explained.
“If she finds the perfect home, it will be the best day ever. I get to spoil and love her while she’s here, but I don’t want her to have a forever family. Knowing that, I can’t even describe it in words. It’s so heartwarming.”
Every purchase at Paws In goes toward helping dogs like Aggie get a second chance at life.
”[Being in foster homes] Because of the shelter environment and stress, they are completely changed. So all the unneutered dogs and dogs that are giving birth are right there,” McGinniss said.
“It is said that rescue dogs typically sleep two hours a night, so when they can relax in the house, they return to nature, blossom, and get ready for adoption.”
Canine Cupids is always looking for help from the community, whether it’s in the form of donations to our boutique or foster families.
“We really need volunteers to open up more, because right now we’re only open on Fridays and Saturdays, four hours a day. It’s all volunteer-based,” McGinniss said.
