PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry is leading a coalition of 26 states seeking to limit the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by telemarketers.
Henry joined attorneys general from other states in writing a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) highlighting the potential harms of the use of AI and urging the FCC to strongly restrict such use. There is.
In November, the FCC posted a notice of inquiry seeking comments on the impact and use of AI technology in consumer communications and how the technology fits with the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). Specifically, the FCC asked about the potential for AI technology to function as the functional equivalent of a live agent.
Attorney General Henry led a comment letter to the FCC, stating that marketers who wish to use AI to impersonate human voices must, for example, obtain the prior written consent of the target consumer. They said they should be required to follow TCPA rules and regulations regarding “artificial voices.”
“Technology is constantly advancing and expanding, and we must ensure that these new developments are not used to exploit, deceive, or manipulate consumers,” said Attorney General Henry.
