Olympic slalom gold medalist Petra Vulova suffered a season-ending torn ligament in her right knee after falling during the giant slalom on Saturday.
“We are confident that we can handle the situation,” Vlhova said in a statement released by the team. “I will fight to make a comeback as soon as possible.”
Vlhova races in her home country of Slovakia. She slipped around gate 9 on her first run.then fell.
Her momentum went sideways towards the courseside fencing. She stopped and sat up slightly on her side before she was helped.
She was taken down the hill on a sled and waved to spectators as she passed near the finish area.
Vlhova, 28, has won 31 World Cup races and has shared slalom supremacy with Mikaela Shiffrin in recent years.
Olympic GS gold medalist Sarah Hector (Sweden) then won the two-run race by 1.52 seconds over Shiffrin, the largest women’s GS margin since February 2004.
Shiffrin achieved her 149th World Cup podium, six shy of the record held by Swede Ingemar Stenmark, who raced in the 1970s and 1980s. Last season, Shiffrin broke Stenmark’s World Cup win record of 86 and now has 94.
The women will compete in a slalom race in Jasna on Sunday, which will be broadcast to subscribers on skiandsnowboard.live.
