boston – Matt Poitras was, of course, prepared for a little teasing from his teammates.
With three Czechs in the dressing room, the rookie centerman expected some bitterness over the Canadian club’s loss to a European nation in the world juniors.
“That makes sense,” Poitras said. “There are a few Czech guys here…”
Despite the teasing, the Bruins are certainly happy to have Poitras back on the team after spending nearly three weeks in Sweden for the 2024 World Junior Championship. Poitras is similarly excited to be back despite the disappointing loss in the quarterfinals.
“It was a lot of fun. I mean, it was a dream come true to put on that jersey and see those guys. And I had a great time there. But I’m happy to be back here,” Poitras said. Ta. “Everyone has welcomed me…I’m going to try my best to get better every day in practice and do everything I can to help this team and win games here.”
“I have no regrets. I’m still glad I went there.”
Coach Jim Montgomery said the Bruins will continue to evaluate Poitras as he rejoins the team and adjusts to the change in time. He added that no decision has yet been made as to when the Ontario native will return to NHL action.
“I’m going to take it one day at a time and try to get back to this time zone,” said Poitras, who participated in an optional morning skate at Warrior Ice Arena on Thursday. “It’s going to take a few days to get my sleep schedule back on track and feel like I’m on ice. I don’t know. I’ll just take it one day at a time and see.”
In recent weeks, Montgomery and Bruins GM Don Sweeney have said the team could use Poitras on the wing when he returns to action, which would be fine with the 19-year-old. Ta.
“I’m open to anything,” Poitras said. “I’ve played on the wing in the past, and sometimes it’s a little bit simpler than center. But yeah, I’m comfortable playing anywhere.”
