A West Pueblo business owner who once struggled with addiction takes pride in hiring workers who are recovering from similar challenges as Steel City Hardwood & Flooring expands its services. There is.
Nathan Haines served four years as a private in the U.S. Army during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan when he was seriously injured and suffered a broken femur.
“I became quite addicted to painkillers and suffered from addiction for several years until I recovered about 12 or 13 years ago,” Haynes explained. “I’ve been an entrepreneur for 10 years now, so I was able to overcome that and create something out of my life.”
“I genuinely care about people who are recovering from addiction, so I won’t allow that to exclude people from employment,” he said, adding that some Second Chance employees have a “great work ethic.” He pointed out that some people show this, while others do not. It was a challenge.
Haynes took over ownership of Steel City Hardwood, located at 32 N. Silicon Drive, last April. Original owner Mike Schlapp started his business in 2001.
“I had a floor installation business that I wanted to expand, and he was thinking of retiring, so I bought the business from him,” Haynes explained.
Haynes launched a social media campaign to expand his company’s offerings and said it’s “on track. We have a great core team of installers and salespeople.”
The company employs a team of eight employees and brings in subcontractors as needed. This retailer sells hardwood, engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl, stone polymer composites, tile, laminate and carpet.
“One of the things that sets us apart is that we specialize in hardwood lumber and custom wood designs. We just hung flooring on the ceiling last week,” he said with a laugh.
“Our revenue stream helps people who have early 1900s floors that need restoration or refinishing. If it’s historic and the floor is original, people can bring it back to life. We want to do that,” Haynes said.
“In fact, our slogan is ‘bring your floors back to life,'” he said.
The company also does commercial work, and Steel City staff just completed a “large tile job for the Pueblo Country Club.”
“I think it’s beautifully done. It’s amazing,” Haynes said.
Installers typically work within a one-hour radius of Pueblo, with projects in Walsenburg, Trinidad, Rye, Colorado City, Canon City, Colorado Springs, La Junta, and Westcliff.
Steel City Hardwood is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The company’s phone number is 719-547-1110.
