Kendrick spoke to a group of about 120 kids from five local boys and girls clubs: Walnut Hills High School baseball, Oyler High School softball and the Reds Youth Academy. After showing the NLBM video, Kendrick discussed the history of the Negro Leagues, shared stories of many Negro League legends, and conducted her Q&A with the audience.
“This game reflects life more than you think,” he told them. “You’re going to fail more often than you’re going to succeed. There aren’t many things in life where you get praised for having a 30 percent success rate like you do in baseball. That’s how challenging this game is. So you go back to the batter’s box. , you learn how to deal with failure because you know you have to dust yourself off and figure out how to get it done. That’s what I like about our game.”
The beauty of Kendrick’s message and story is that it can translate and resonate with all ages and backgrounds. Earlier in the day, Kendrick visited Great American Ball Park as part of the Reds’ Black History Month Speaker Series and spoke with the Reds’ front office. And after a stop at the Reds’ youth academy, Kendrick returned downtown to appear as a special guest at a Wright Society event at the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. Kendrick said that in one day he addressed an audience spanning at least three generations.
“When we talk about love of the game, being dedicated to something, believing in yourself, those are all core themes of the Negro Leagues, and they resonate with everyone, no matter where they come from,” Kendrick said. Told. “That’s universal. And I think they can all take that with them.
