A new report from the Center for an Urban Future (CUF) outlines 20 ways to increase revenue for New York City’s parks. The report explains, “New York City’s park maintenance challenges compound deeper infrastructure problems that have only grown over time.” The park system faces capital needs of at least $685 million just to restore existing infrastructure to a state of good repair, with 30 percent of those needs ongoing or planned over the next three years. It’s just that. ”
However, some residents still lack adequate access to parks. “While the city has made significant progress since 2021, more than 16 percent of New York City residents do not live within a 40-minute walk of a small park or within a half-mile walk of a large park.”
According to a press release from CUF, “Ideas include a new $1 surcharge on tickets sold at stadiums located in parks; Adding 10 new restaurants and destination-worthy concessions to parks in five boroughs; Gas-powered leaf blowers and landscaping fees. Programs to monetize organic waste from parks, such as turning fallen trees into commercial timber, are helping urban green spaces see record usage. However, it provides city leaders with multiple options to establish a dedicated park revenue stream at a time when they are also facing increased maintenance needs.”
