ARLINGTON, Texas — The World Series champion Texas Rangers are adding veteran relief pitcher David Robertson to their bullpen.
According to sources, Robertson and the Rangers have agreed to a one-year contract. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday night on condition of anonymity because the contract is pending a medical exam.
Robertson has pitched for five teams since returning from Tommy John surgery that forced him to miss the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and most of 2021.
ESPN, citing anonymous sources, reported that the contract with the Rangers is in the range of $11 million to $12 million.
The 38-year-old right-hander returned at the end of the 2021 season with the Tampa Bay Rays, pitching 12 innings in 12 games.
Robertson has since appeared in 120 games over the past two seasons. He pitched for the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies in 2022, and last year for the New York Mets and Miami Marlins. He pitched 62 innings last season, totaling 18 saves and posting a 3.03 ERA.
The Rangers won their first World Series title last year despite their bullpen having a 4.77 ERA in the regular season and converting only 30 of 63 save chances. This 47.6% conversion rate was the lowest ever for a team that made the playoffs.

Robertson pitched for seven teams in 15 major league seasons, his first seven with the New York Yankees. He has been to the playoffs nine times, winning the World Series with the Yankees in 2009 and the National League pennant with the Phillies in 2022.
He appeared in 793 regular season games, posting a record of 63 wins, 42 losses, 175 saves, and a 2.90 ERA. He pitched 47 1/3 innings in 42 postseason games, posting a 6-0 record with a 3.04 ERA.
