Sam Altman praised Apple’s Vision Pro this week, deeming the new spatial computer the “second most impressive” piece of technology since the iPhone was introduced in 2007.
OpenAI’s CEO commented: post X on Friday, just days after the Vision Pro officially hit the market for $3,500 each.
Mixed reality headsets allow users to interact with digital media that is integrated with the real world. Users can control apps on their devices through their eyes and fingers.
Business Insider reporter Jordan Hart said the device has the potential to usher in a new normal, much like Apple’s iPhone did more than 15 years ago.
But while this new technology may be revolutionary, Altman said he believes the Vision Pro is only the “second most impressive” device to come out in the past 17 years.
Although he didn’t say what he thinks the most impressive technology is, it’s safe to assume he was referring to artificial intelligence, and possibly OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which launched in November 2022.
Altman has previously said that AI is on track to change the world in ways not seen since the iPhone put computers in people’s pockets.
ChatGPT has already begun to impact industries and daily life in unprecedented ways. Altman said he told developers he wanted ChatGPT to be a “super smart personal assistant” for work.
But while Altman loves ChatGPT, he doesn’t necessarily like the name. In response to his Friday X post, another user suggested that Vision Pro was a bad name.
“chatgpt is pretty bad.” altman I followed up.
This isn’t the first time Altman has denigrated the now household name of OpenAI.
“It’s a terrible name, but it might be too universal to change,” Altman told Trevor Noah on The Comedian’s Show. podcast“What Now? with Trevor Noah” in December.
