Shopping trips to Sam’s Club are likely to be a little shorter, at least at the exit.
Walmart Inc.’s Warehouse Club announced Tuesday that it will eliminate physical receipt checks and use artificial intelligence to scan shopping carts as members exit the store.
“Eliminating the few seconds it takes to scan a receipt at the exit door is enough to make a difference,” Megan Crozier, Sam’s Club US chief merchant, said in the company’s keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. is of value,” he said.
During the presentation, Walmart played a video demonstration of the technology depicting two versions of the same shopper. A tech-savvy shopper teaches a less savvy shopper how to scan an item with her Sam’s Club mobile app and pay with it.
As the shopper leaves the store, the less tech-savvy shopper says, “Wait, I have to show you my receipt.” Her opponent passes through a large blue gateway to scan for items.
Equipped with cameras and sensors, the gateway captures images of shoppers’ carts, recognizes individual items, and confirms purchases, all in real-time.

“It’s one thing to have an easy exit technology like this in a small store with a few products,” Crozier said, casting a shadow over competitors’ technologies such as Amazon’s Just Walk Out. The technology has been installed in 10 stores, and the company says it plans to roll it out to all of its roughly 600 warehouses in the U.S. by the end of this year.
