Samsung is introducing generative AI technology to its new Galaxy S24 series of Android-powered smartphones. The features include the ability to instantly translate audio between users and edit calls, and are part of Samsung’s suite of artificial intelligence features called Galaxy AI. Samsung says it is also partnering with Google (GOOG, GOOGL) to leverage his Gemini AI model for several AI products.
The $799 Galaxy S24, $999 Galaxy S24+, and $1,299 Galaxy S24 Ultra launch on January 31, expected to be a broader push among consumer tech companies to monetize the generative AI boom This will be the kickoff for the upcoming move.
All three phones have the same AI features, so whether you choose the entry-level S24 or the top-of-the-line S24 Ultra, you’re sure to have access to these features. One of the breakthrough features of the Galaxy S24 series is Circle to Search. This allows you to circle items on your screen and quickly find them with Google Search. So, if you’re scrolling through social media and you see a photo of a cool place, you can circle it on your screen and get more information about it via Google.
Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have or are equipped with many of the same features as the Galaxy S24 series. But Google’s smartphones don’t have the same market share as Samsung’s, so the S24 line will likely be the first time many consumers have access to on-device generative AI.
The Galaxy S24 is just one of a series of devices and products that the tech giant will launch in 2024 to capitalize on the interest in generative AI. The PC maker is adding generated AI to laptops and desktops through a new chip and new keyboard keys for his Copilot powered by Microsoft’s (MSFT) AI. And automakers are getting in on the action, with Mercedes (MBG.DE) and Volkswagen (VWAGY) adding ChatGPT to their vehicles in the coming months. Mercedes products will be in beta version.
But Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series offers more than enhanced AI tricks. The S24 and S24+ feature 6.2-inch and 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x displays, respectively. These are much larger than the 6.1-inch and 6.6-inch displays found on the S23 and S23+. Like the S23 Ultra, the S24 Ultra has a 6.8-inch dynamic AMOLED 2x display.
All three phones now offer display refresh rates between 1 and 120Hz. This means you can speed up the number of frames displayed per second to 120 frames per second for smooth animations, or lower the refresh rate to 1 frame per second to save battery life. . .
On the camera front, Samsung has equipped the S24 and S24+ with three lenses, including a 50-megapixel wide-angle lens, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 10MP telephoto lens. The telephoto lens allows up to 3x optical zoom. The S24 Ultra, on the other hand, comes with a 200MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and a 50MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom.
This is actually a step down from the 10x optical zoom that Samsung used on the S23 Ultra, but it’s worth noting that with 10x zoom, even the slightest twitch can make it quite difficult to keep your subject in frame. If you think about it, you’ll find that it’s actually more convenient to have your hand frame come off.
All of these are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chips. As for memory, the S24 comes with 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of storage. Both the S24+ and S24 Ultra come with 12GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of storage. The S24 Ultra also has a 1TB storage option.
Adding generative AI elements to the Galaxy S24 line gives Samsung a hot new technology to help market its latest smartphones. Over the past few years, the smartphone market has generally felt quite stagnant. After all, there are only so many incremental changes that can be made to a phone’s camera or screen before consumers start to get bored.
With Galaxy AI, Samsung has the opportunity to make generative AI a cornerstone of the next few generations of smartphones. But for the company to keep consumers captivated and eager for more, it needs to deliver on the promise of AI and continue to build on it.
