san antonio – A San Antonio couple’s dream business was ruined in seconds after a weekend crash.
On Saturday morning, Jose and Alicia Lepe were on their way to sell breakfast from their food trailer when they were rear-ended, severely damaging their pickup truck and trailer.
“BOOM! I felt a jolt in my back and it felt like the truck was lifting. And then, ‘BOOM, BOOM, BOOM!’ We started rolling over,” Jose Lepe said.
According to San Antonio Police, the accident happened near Loop 1604 and Culebra Road. The truck behind Lepes got too close, so both trucks attempted to change lanes at the same time.
A following truck rear-ended Lepes, who was traveling at a higher speed, causing him to fall into the median.
“My back, my neck, everything hurts,” Jose Lepe said.
Aside from the pain, the Lepeses suffered only minor injuries, but the truck and trailer were totaled in the accident. According to the couple, a total of approximately $70,000 to $80,000 was stolen from both accounts.
“Our work is done,” Jose said, and Alicia added, “It’s all over.”
The setback came two and a half years after the couple retired and invested everything in their Mio Amore food truck.
The couple said they finally got everything they ever wanted by working for them and keeping their customers happy and wanting more.
“Everyone loved our popular pasta, Mamma Mia. It’s spicy. They always said, ‘Give me that pasta…the spicy one,'” Jose Lepe said with a laugh.
The Lepes said they don’t know how they’ll recover. They hope the donations will help them make ends meet, but for now they are just grateful.
“It was a really bad accident and everyone there thought we were dead, so we’re thankful to God that we’re safe,” Jose Lepe said.
