The Student Association collected off-campus housing data and implemented changes to the all-student survey that included questions gauging students’ feelings about personal finances and off-campus housing.
The SAS is a survey administered to all students each semester and must be completed prior to course registration. SA President Solomon Nee said little had changed in the SA section of the SAS since Rice’s tenure.
“This year has been the year of the most changes,” Nee, a junior at Jones, said, mostly in the form of follow-up questions.
But some undergraduates haven’t noticed much of a change.
“When I take the SAS, I usually pass it as quickly as possible so I can register for classes…Honestly, I didn’t feel any difference,” said Will Rice College senior Jacob Coyle.
Some of SA’s additional questions are aimed at collecting data for collaborative projects.
The results of one such question, “Please tell me which intersection is closest to my off-campus residence to better inform me of potential future shuttle stops,” were provided by the university as a graduate student. data is used to create an off-campus population heat map. Student responses regarding preparation tended to be negative, and Nee said this data prompted SA to begin working with the General Counsel’s Office to help students get more information on how to enter into rental agreements. He said it would be.
Coyle said he believes the university needs more resources when it comes to off-campus housing.
“We’re young adults who just graduated from high school. For 18-, 19-year-olds, it can be really daunting to think about renting your own apartment or something like that. That’s why we provide resources like I think so. [the] It’s going to be great for universities to navigate that,” Coyle said.

Many students responded that they would like to learn more about tax returns through the write-in question option.
“There are a lot of universities that have taxpayers on campus, either through student government or the campus,” Nee said. “We could also collaborate with other organizations on campus to see if people would be interested. Ni added that this is particularly relevant for those receiving financial aid, as they must report the financial aid they receive as taxes.
