SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Airports in South Dakota can now apply for additional funding thanks to the South Dakota Legislature. With the passage of Senate Bill 144, South Dakota airports will now receive additional funding.
“Many of our state’s airports are in need of capital and have significant capital projects,” said Dan Letellier, Sioux Falls Airport Executive Director.
Sioux Falls Regional Airport Executive Director Dan Letellier said construction costs have increased over the past 25 years, creating a gap in the airport’s ability to take on projects. A $10 million bill could change that.
“To summarize our parking project, this is a $60 million investment, and the airport is currently using our own funds. The addition of five new gates will allow us to continue to grow,” said Leterrier.
Airports also need to respond to traveler demand. John Dougherty flies out of the Sioux Falls airport multiple times a year.
“We’re heading to Phoenix, Arizona. I don’t like going to Omaha and having to drive back after a big vacation,” Dougherty said.
The airport expects the number of passengers departing from Sioux Falls to continue to break records and hopes the additional funding will help maintain the airport. Letellier said the Sioux Falls Airport alone provides more than $500 million in economic impact to the community.
Rapid City Regional Airport can also apply for funding.
