JACKSON, Tenn. — Life is short, so buy something new. One local company is taking the city by storm.
Unique, cool, and different are just a few words to describe this business. Smith Oddities held its grand opening on Saturday.
We spoke to owner Dustin Smith. He just wanted to open a place where diversity was accepted, he said.
“A lot of people’s art doesn’t fit into what other people think. If I can provide space for other artists to display their weird and spooky art, I’d love to help. ” said Smith.
Originating around the 15th century, macabre art allows artists to explore the darker and more mysterious aspects of the universe through art.
“Everyone needs to see something a little weird in their life, and we didn’t have anything like that. That’s why I’m here,” Smith said.
Smith, a Jackson native, said his business has always been open to everyone.
“It’s always going to be a safe space. A safe space for anyone to come. We have other artists here and we’re going to exhibit their work. We’re expanding this and bringing in other artists. We also want to have our work here,” Smith said.
Some artists couldn’t contain their joy when talking about Smith and his efforts to make their voices heard through art.
“Dustin is probably one of the hardest-working people I know. He stands by his values and is a very determined person,” said artist Jessica Yak.
Artist Anna Johnson said, “Dustin has helped me grow tremendously as an individual artist, as my art has never been featured in a venue like this before.”
As the days passed, the artists’ excitement continued to grow.
“I didn’t realize how big the market for spooky art was here, so it’s really great that the Misfit community has a place where artists can come and exhibit their work and people are coming out for that.” the artist said. Raven Moonra.
As the old saying goes, “Inspiration is an unwilling guest of the lazy.” It’s clear that Dustin has worked hard and been an inspiration to others.
Smith Oddities is located at 207 East Main Street in downtown Jackson and is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
