YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Yuma’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) assists Yuma and La Paz County entrepreneurs looking to start a business.
One local business in Yuma was able to share how much the center has helped them.
“They helped us a lot to get things done, including creating a business plan. They also helped us understand where our profit was coming from, how we could add to it, and how we could add to it. It really helped us understand how we could scale.’ So can our services,” said Jackie Alves, co-founder of The Beauty Bar.
Beauty Bar was also able to expand and grow with the support of SBDC.
Last year, the center created 246 jobs and provided counseling and training to 973 clients.
SBDC Director Crystal Mendoza explained how a team of just six people was able to help so many people.
“My team is small but strong, so we have a range of technical expertise that can support entrepreneurs. That’s why I’ve been able to support 45 new businesses,” Mendoza said.
The organization has increased sales to more than $17.4 million across a variety of businesses.
Mendoza recommends buying locally instead of from large corporations.
“When we support local entrepreneurs, we not only help create new jobs, we retain jobs within our communities, and of course ultimately create stronger communities within our communities. You can make it,” Mendoza said.
Arizona Western College hosts and supports the Small Business Development Center.
