Updated February 16th at 6:35pm ET: Sony appears to have sold out of PlayStation Portal, as the handheld remote player is no longer available via PlayStation Direct.
Sony’s PlayStation Portal is a somewhat unusual, single-purpose device that has been disappearing from shelves since its launch in mid-November, and is now back in stock. The PlayStation 5 exclusive Remote Play device is once again available from Sony’s PlayStation Direct storefront for the regular suggested price of $199.99.
The sole focus of this portal is to stream games from your PlayStation 5 over Wi-Fi and to an 8-inch touchscreen LCD. It’s not all that different from using Remote Play on an iPad or a phone with a Backbone One controller, but the all-in-one solution supports the full suite of DualSense haptics, including adaptive triggers and tilt control.
If you own a PS5 and like the idea of taking your games into another room, Portal might be a perfect fit. However, for the best experience, you’ll probably need to connect your console to Ethernet. You should also know that some games, namely fighter jets and online shooters, may have too long a delay to run. But if you’re the type of person who plays many of the big-budget AAA single-player experiences that the PlayStation brand has become known for, you’ll be fine.
