Spring nitrogen stabilizer worth the investment
Nutrient management experts suggest that spring nitrogen stabilizers are worth the investment.
Chris Kluemke of Corteva Agriscience tells Brownfield that he understands why many farmers should use stabilizers in the fall.
“However, many of these same farmers tell me that they apply nitrogen very close to when the corn uses it, so there is no need to stabilize it in the spring or during topdressing. However, this could not be further from the truth.”
He said nitrogen is subject to loss no matter when it is used.
“In fact, heavy spring rains and elevated soil temperatures are two factors that can cause leaching and denitrification. Additionally, some high-yielding corn hybrids provide nearly 40 percent of the nitrogen needed after the ear. We have to remember that some things occupy.”
Krumke said Corteva partnered with Purdue University on a 2023 trial that resulted in more than 10 bushels per acre in stable plots because additional nitrogen was available in the root zone late in the growing season. It has been shown that yields can be obtained.
