RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Amid financial crisis and accreditation uncertainty for the University of St. Augustine, Interim President Dr. Marcus Burgess held a press conference on Monday to discuss the university’s future financial plans.
These economic hardships have resulted in staff and students not being able to pay their salaries, classes being canceled, and trash on campus not being picked up.
Dr Burgess said financial issues were not unique to St August’s, but were, he said, “unfortunately part of our DNA”.
“We are determined to overcome this visceral crisis and overcome this proud institution, filled with the faith that our dark past has taught us,” he said.
Although these issues will not be resolved tomorrow, Dr. Burgess shared the steps the university has taken and is taking to address them. The first one was the university’s payroll meeting on Friday.
He said this reassured faculty and staff that SAU recognized the sacrifices they made.
University leaders also held a candlelight vigil on Sunday, demonstrating the strong community around students and staff.
Burgess outlined some proactive steps HBCUs are already taking.
As another step, he said the university is preparing to appeal to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Revocation of Accreditation (SACSCOC).
Other steps include working with a team of financial consultants to create a forensic audit.
Dr Burgess said: “These measures will ensure our economic viability is restored.” “These steps are a thoughtful process to move our beloved St. Augustine University forward.”
