Stacey Wakefield, widow of former Boston Red Sox pitcher and two-time World Series champion Tim Wakefield, has died.
Her family announced in a statement released through the Red Sox that she died Wednesday at her home in Massachusetts, less than five months after her husband died at age 57. Stacey was 53 years old, according to online records.
“She was surrounded by family, dear friends and wonderful carers and nurses. The loss is unimaginable, especially after losing Tim just under five months ago.” the statement said. our hearts are so broken. ”
The family mentioned the diagnosis but did not disclose the cause of death. In September, Tim’s former Red Sox teammate Curt Schilling said on a podcast that the Wakefields had both been diagnosed with cancer. Schilling said Tim has brain cancer and Stacey has pancreatic cancer. The news sparked an outpouring of support for the Wakefields and criticism that Schilling had published the matter without permission.
“We will remember Stacey as a strong, loving, thoughtful, kind person and the most down-to-earth person you will ever meet,” the family continued in a statement. She takes comfort in the fact that she will be reunited with Tim, the love of her life. ”
Stacey and Tim are survived by their children Trevor and Brianna;
While Tim was praised for his accomplishments on the field, he and Stacey were also recognized in Boston for their work in the community.
Stacy worked with her husband to raise money for multiple charities, including the Red Sox Foundation. They also worked with the Jimmy Fund to visit patients and raise money for childhood cancer charities.
