When Brandon Steiner proposed a fund to support sports management students in the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, he identified certain types of students who would benefit most from the fund. I had it in mind.

Steiner, a 1981 graduate of Syracuse University and current chairman of the Sports Management Advisory Council, grew up in a low-income neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. His father left home when he was five years old, and his mother, Evelyn, ran a hair salon, but it was financially difficult to raise Brandon and his two brothers. did.
After 30 years as founder and chairman of Steiner Sports Marketing and Memorabilia, Brandon Steiner is running two new companies: The Steiner Agency and Collectible Xchange.
Despite her low SAT score, Steiner convinced Syracuse’s admissions counselor that she would “never regret letting me in,” she wrote in her 2012 book “You Gotta Have Balls.” . Steiner was admitted and his family received enough financial aid to pay his tuition, but there was still one problem. That is, he did not have the additional money needed for his daily life.
Steiner has never forgotten those days. In collaboration with Falk College Associate Dean for Advancement David Salanger and Sport Management Chair and Director Michael Verry, Steiner created the Brandon S. Steiner Sport Management Student Assistance Fund. The fund “supports the health, housing, education, and overall well-being of Syracuse University undergraduate students” enrolled in Falk College’s Sports Management Department. ”
“Look at kids like me,” Steiner says. “I was going to work full-time in college. Otherwise, going to Syracuse probably wouldn’t work out. If I had just been promoted and didn’t have the desire to work full-time — and I didn’t want to work…” I’m not talking about studying for 40 hours a week, I’m talking about working 40 hours a week — I don’t think I could have earned it.
“But I don’t know if that would work in today’s day and age,” he continues. “I want to focus on poor children with special circumstances. If they can get more support, they will come.”
The Steiner Student Support Fund provides single-year support and students can apply for funding by completing this survey. A student may not receive funds more than once.
Sports Management students, including those in Sports Analytics and Sports Venue and Event Management, are encouraged to apply for internships and work in the sports industry as much as possible during their studies. As part of her degree requirements, she will complete her 12-credit senior capstone with a full semester of experience in a sports organization.

Due to the program’s rigorous demands, it can be difficult for students to work the hours that Steiner worked during his student days to cover food, housing, tuition, supplies, and other important student needs. Steiner hopes his foundation will help all students, but especially underrepresented students like Steiner who need support and become future stars in the sports industry. He said he hopes to do so.
“We need to make it easier for them to come here,” Steiner said. “And the reality is that teams, leagues and players are all diverse, and we want the students we send into the industry to be diverse as well.”
At Syracuse, Steiner enrolled at the Whitman School of Business after his mother encouraged him to major in accounting. With his work ethic, ingenuity and ability to impress, Steiner served as founder and chairman of Steiner’s Sports Marketing and Memorabilia for more than 30 years.
In 2019, he launched two new companies. One is The Steiner Agency, the nation’s leading independent athlete sourcing source, and the other is Collectible Xchange, an online platform for fans, collectors, store owners, celebrities, athletes and teams to buy and sell collectibles.
The Steiner Student Assistance Fund is the latest way Steiner is giving back to the sports management programs at Syracuse University and Falk College, which he played a key role in founding more than 20 years ago. Attending Syracuse “gave me the biggest break I’ve ever had,” he says, adding that his foundation will provide opportunities for students like him to become the next generation of sports marketing pioneers. I hope it will become.
“There is no greater feeling of pride than the feeling of passing the torch to the next generation,” Steiner wrote in his book. “I can’t wait to see the innovative products they create.”
