December housing starts and building permit data released Thursday morning
Investors will analyze December housing starts and building permit data on Thursday to see whether lower mortgage rates have increased activity in the sector.
U.S. housing starts, a measure of new home construction, are expected to fall 8.1% in December from last month, according to FactSet’s consensus estimate. This is a decrease from last month’s 14.8% rise.
The number of new housing units approved in the U.S. is expected to rise to 1.476 million last month, according to FactSet consensus estimates. This is an increase from the previous 1.467 million units.

- Discover Financial Services — Shares fell nearly 7% after Discover Financial Services reported fourth-quarter results. The financial services company reported quarterly revenue of $4.2 billion, beating expectations of $4.1 billion, according to analysts surveyed by LSEG. GAAP earnings per share were $1.54 and were not immediately comparable.
- Alcoa — Shares fell nearly 3% after the aluminum producer reported fourth-quarter results. Alcoa’s adjusted loss came in at 56 cents a share, compared to expectations of 86 cents, according to a survey of analysts compiled by LSEG. Sales were $2.6 billion, in line with expectations.
- HB Fuller — HB Fuller stock fell about 1%. The company’s fourth-quarter adjusted earnings were $1.32 per share, beating the FactSet consensus estimate for earnings of $1.27 per share. Sales were $902.9 million, lower than expectations of $929.9 million.
