Student government leaders voiced concerns about whether students can file complaints against faculty and staff, announced an open call for initiative funds, and asked New York University’s next president at Thursday’s student government general meeting. We debated whether to ask for it.
At the meeting, Heidi White, a senator and clinical professor in the College of Liberal Studies, addressed changes made to the University’s Title IIV. “In my experience at NYU, they have to look at the nuances and make sure there are no loopholes,” White said at the conference. “These things need to be included in the policy.”
The grievance process initially directed students, faculty, and staff to submit complaints to their respective department chairs, who could informally facilitate resolution before proceeding to faculty council. White said when he tried to contact New York University about changes to the handbook, the university directed him to the Office of Equal Opportunity.
White pointed out that although he received a redlined copy, which traditionally highlights all changes, there was no indication that the section would be removed. White said he plans to explain the situation in more detail and share it with several campus organizations, including SGA, to spread awareness.
“I look forward to reading the memo that Heidi White and her committee have been working on and will share soon,” SGA President Ryan Carney said in a statement to WSN. “Given the potential impact this may have on students, SGA is working to provide greater clarity regarding changes to the Faculty Handbook by continuing dialogue with the Chair of the Senate Faculty Council and the Provost.”
At Thursday’s meeting, the SGA also launched an application to submit ideas for its project. $500,000 Initiative Funding. The student government said the purpose of the fun was to respond to and carry out student requests. Carney told WSN that plans for the initiative fund include a food pantry in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development and a new fountain in the Kimmel College Living Center.
SGA members also discussed what they would like to see. New York University’s next president. The university formed a selection committee for a new president in December last year, and Georgina Dopico is currently serving as interim president. He has been in the position since summer 2022.. SGA members said they hope the future chancellor will focus on artificial intelligence and technology development, increase resources allocated to graduate studies, and increase transparency regarding funding across the school.
“This role has a tremendous impact on student success,” Carney, who is also a member of the Chancellor’s Search Committee, told WSN. “They do a lot of great work for New York University and New York City, and for the United States and around the world.”
