The Springfield Public Utilities Commission and Catholic Community Services have announced a fund to provide financial assistance to SUB customers who suffered financial losses due to January’s ice storm.
Those costs “may include replacing groceries, gas for generators, hotel stays, tree damage, home damage, etc.,” SUB spokeswoman Meredith Clark told the Register-Guard. told.
Springfield was particularly hard hit by the 2024 ice storm, with SUB experiencing power outages from Jan. 13 to Jan. 28, with some customers without power for 11 days, the utility confirmed.
Clark said there are no strict guidelines on what documentation is required, but customers should provide documentation whenever possible. “For example, if you went to a hotel and didn’t keep your receipt, you can submit your credit card receipt or ask the hotel to issue you a receipt.”
To qualify, customers must earn no more than 125% of the area median income. That’s $69,700 per person or $133,950 for a family of four. Payments are capped at $250 per household, and the program will run from 8 a.m. on Monday, March 18, until SUBs have paid a total of $250,000.
SUB said Catholic Community Services will review applications and pay people with Visa gift cards by April 5.
