HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Thanks to a unique partnership between a local school district and Amazon, Sumner County high school students are setting the stage for a future in the business world in a groundbreaking educational initiative.
This collaboration aims to provide students with company-level certifications and leadership skills that are applicable to both their current and future careers.
At the forefront of this innovative program is Mellor Hyde Magnet School, where students translate classroom lessons into real-world applications.
Junior Gina Cruz explained that the focus of the curriculum is on practical skills such as “eliminating waste and making processes more efficient.”
These students, primarily juniors and seniors, are studying Lean Six, a prestigious business methodology known for its effectiveness in increasing productivity and reducing costs in a variety of industries, from Fortune 500 companies to nonprofit organizations. I am Sigma certified.
Sumner County Schools holds the distinction of being the first educational institution in the world to partner with Amazon on a Lean Six Sigma certification program.
Amazon experts are taking an active role in this education enterprise by providing Sumner County teachers with the business tools they need to teach and mentor students in Lean Six Sigma principles and practices.
Courtney Givens, a business teacher at Mellor Hyde College, said developing critical leadership skills through this program is invaluable for any industry.
Inspired by the training she received from Amazon, Givens has successfully incorporated Lean Six Sigma teachings into her curriculum and boasts a 99% pass rate for her first yellow belt certification students.
Mabel Shelton, Amazon program manager and Mellor Hyde alumnus, highlighted the program’s wide-ranging benefits, not only increasing employability but also promoting consumer awareness and personal growth. Then he said.

More than 130 students across Sumner County Schools have already earned Lean Six Sigma certifications and are ready to gain a competitive edge and explore diverse career paths with their newly acquired skills.
