SWAMPSCOTT — Superintendent Pamela Angelakis announced that Cheryl Herrick Stella, the district’s finance director, has been promoted to assistant superintendent of finance and operations.
The promotion comes on the heels of Herrick Stella’s one-year anniversary since he started working at Swampscott schools. Angelakis said her new role will allow her to influence the direction of the district, not just its finances.
“This represents a transition from a more focused financial management role to a more strategically focused leadership role,” Angelakis said. “She has been very involved in our vision, our mission, our district strategy… She’s not just in the economic realm.”
She added that she feels Herrick Stella has done a good job of educating herself and others about financial nuances through professional development. The School Committee also expressed its gratitude and satisfaction with Mr. Herrick Stella’s performance at Thursday’s meeting. Angelakis said the title change does not come with an increase in payments.
The commission then held public hearings on school choice and ultimately voted unanimously against adopting the principle.
“Historically, Swampscott Public Schools has never been a school choice district,” Angelakis said.
School choice allows students from other municipalities to enroll in the Swampscott school district. One of the reasons Mr. Angelakis recommended not opting in was to focus on the continued growth of his METCO program in the district. Commission Chairwoman Suzanne Wright said the commission intends to continue discussing the topic annually, despite the town’s lack of participation in the past.
