  • The owner of a sunscreen business says he owes TikToker Miqueila Nogueira $10,000.
  • He said the beauty star promised to use and review his products, but never did.
  • Nogueira responded that he was not responsible for the success of his business.

A sunscreen business owner claimed he owed the TikToker $10,000 because he didn’t use and review his product as promised.

Matthew Stevens, CEO of self-tanner company Illusion Bronze, posted on TikTok on Thursday that Miqueila Nogueira, who has more than 15 million followers, never stuck to a verbal agreement. .

“Mikayla’s lies cost me $10,000,” he said on TikTok, which has been viewed more than 6 million times. “Yes, I am $10,000 in debt because of her lies.”

Stevens’ tanner uses information about a customer’s eye color, hair color and skin tone to promise an accurate match out of 125 shades, but there is a much larger range of “hundreds.” He said the company stole Stevens’ idea.

He said he contacted Mr. Nogueira and asked if he could help promote the product.

But four days after Mr. Stevens’ request, Mr. Stephens said he saw Mr. Nogueira reviewing a rival company’s product instead.

Stevens said she decided to post about the incident on TikTok, where it has been viewed more than 4 million times.

Stevens said Nogueira later contacted her and told her the situation was “purely coincidental.” Stevens shared a screenshot of the conversation in a video.

In his message, Nogueira said he had no intention of hurting small businesses and would try out his tannery “as soon as possible.”

Stevens said he spoke with Nogueira on the phone for about 20 minutes. He felt that her words were good, but it was all a misunderstanding. “It’s been two months,” Stevens added.

During this time, Stevens said his followers constantly asked him about Nogueira’s criticisms. They also visited Nogueira’s page and left comments.

Nogueira then texted Stevens on Dec. 7, telling him she was planning to use it that weekend. “I’ll post a video about this tomorrow,” she wrote, according to the screenshot.

Stevens is aware that Nogueira has said he doesn’t want to work with smaller brands because they often can’t keep up with order demand, and he doesn’t want to put himself in that position. Stated.

He used a Shopify loan to order $10,000 worth of products, believing Nogueira’s reviews would bring in hundreds of sales.

When Nogueira posted, he said her tan was too “terrible” and orange. “I really couldn’t understand how my product line worked or why she looked like that.”

He said he could have messaged Ms. Nogueira anyway and told her she looked beautiful and could have given her some advice on how long she should stay in the tan.

According to screenshots, Nogueira kept it on for 12 hours. Stevens says his products are designed to last only one to two hours.

Nogueira’s TikTok was also not a review video and never materialized.

Stevens said she began to wonder if Nogueira wasn’t using her products at all and instead got a spray tan.

Mr. Stevens then messaged Mr. Nogueira, telling him that he had purchased a large amount of merchandise. Nogueira said she would post a review soon.

Three months later, Stevens said he still had all the product.

Stevens’ video received more than 18,000 comments, with some criticizing Nogueira for not judging the Illusion Bronze.

She responded hours later on her own TikTok, saying that while Stevens was a “really nice person”, she thought it was “unfortunate” that he posted about the issue.

Nogueira took responsibility for not vetting tanners, but said Stevens’ claims of spray tanning were false, saying: “I have never had a spray tan in my life.”

She said her tan also looked orange because of the filter.

Nogueira said he tried to keep Stevens informed, but acknowledged he shouldn’t have promised to review the product on a day when he didn’t have time.

“I was going to get it done,” Nogueira said. “I always get to it, it just takes a little longer sometimes.”

Mr. Nogueira said he never advised Mr. Stevens to buy the tannery plant for $10,000.

“He can’t rely on me for the success of his brand. He can’t do that,” she said. “I don’t know what to do in this situation, but I’m sorry.”

Stevens responded to Nogueira, admitting that he never encouraged her to buy so many products. But she said she needed to address the situation publicly because she felt Nogueira was deliberately ignoring the issue.

Opinions were divided in the comments. Some said they were wary of Nogueira anyway because of the controversies she had been involved in and that she was “supportive” of Stevens.

Some thought that Stevens had rushed the large order too quickly. “What I don’t understand is why he blames her for bad business decisions,” one person wrote.

Some say Stevens should have signed Nogueira.

Stevens and Nogueira did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.
