Tennessee has become the first U.S. state to protect musicians from AI that can clone and manipulate voices without permission, creating deepfakes.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed the Similarity Voice and Image Security (ELVIS) Act on Thursday, adding unauthorized use of a person’s voice to Tennessee’s list of protected rights.
The ELVIS Act will ensure that “no one steals the voices of Tennessee artists,” Lee said at an event announcing the bill in January.

Deepfakes are synthetic media that replicate voices, images, and other aspects of a person and use those characteristics in a new context. The rapid development of generative AI has led to a proliferation of deepfakes, including viral tracks featuring deepfake vocals from Drake and The Weeknd.

“What I’m saying is, if you’ve been trying forever to be somebody — and I’m not talking about someone in the famous money part — an artist. And if someone just takes that away from you, it would seem like it should be illegal,”’ Scheer told The Associated Press.
