Tesla battery supplier Panasonic is reportedly considering additional investment in Kansas. This potential expansion is reportedly known internally as Phase 3 and will reportedly include building a new battery production line. The main customer for the additional production is reportedly Tesla, whose Giga Nevada facility is a joint venture with Panasonic.
According to a person familiar with the matter, nikkei asia He noted that the size of the additional investment would be similar to Panasonic’s current DeSoto plant, which cost about $4 billion to build. However, one of the publication’s sources claimed that the plan is still in its early stages, at least for now. A Nikkei Shimbun official said, “No final decision has been made yet,” but a decision on Phase 3 is expected to be made by the end of the year.
The publication’s sources note that Panasonic is likely to use the additional production capacity to manufacture the 4680 cell, which has about five times the energy capacity of the traditional 2170 cell. Panasonic is not alone in increasing production of 4680 batteries, as competitors such as Tesla itself and LG Energy Solutions are also developing 4680 batteries.
Panasonic’s potential Kansas expansion comes at a pretty interesting time. According to previous reports, Panasonic had already spent a significant portion of its initial investment budget on the DeSoto site for construction costs in the United States. Nevertheless, Mitsutaka Fujita, a researcher at Techno System Research, noted that Panasonic’s plans seem to indicate stable demand from Tesla.
The analyst pointed out that Tesla is “making decent profits even after the price cut.” This will give Tesla an advantage over traditional automakers, especially those that still rely on traditional internal combustion engine vehicles and hybrids to smooth losses in their electric vehicle business. Fujita also said that Tesla may be procuring more 4680 batteries from suppliers in light of delays in its own 4680 efforts and the launch of new vehicles such as the Cybertruck, Tesla Semi, and next-generation Roadster. He pointed out that it was expensive.
