Tesla Cybertruck owners say their cars are starting to rust after rain

Some Tesla owners say their Cybertrucks are starting to rust after being exposed to rain.

In a post on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum, a member with the username Raxar wrote that he picked up his car on February 1st, but was warned that it would rain that day and could rust.

“The advisor specifically mentioned that the Cybertruck would get orange rust marks in the rain, which would require the vehicle to be polished,” a forum member wrote. “I’ve heard about never taking your DeLorean out on a rainy day, but I’ve never read anything about rust or the Cybertruck.”

Laxer said in another post that rust spots started forming on his car just two days after it rained.

The user also shared photos of what they claim are small rust spots on the car’s stainless steel body. The user said the photo was taken after “washing with dish detergent.”

Stainless steel is susceptible to rust in certain environments, according to Mead Metals, a metal services company in Minnesota. Rust is often caused by exposure to water, but also “exposure to harmful chemicals, salt water, grease, or prolonged exposure to heat,” according to a blog post on the company’s website. It is also possible that this may occur.

Vertigo3pc, a fellow Cybertruck Owners Club forum member, wrote on Monday that he took his Cybertruck to a service center to have it checked out after it rained in Los Angeles. “As others have noted, we noticed corrosion on the metal, so we decided to document it and let Tesla know,” they wrote.

The forum member added that a service center employee “documented the corrosion” and said the damage could be repaired.

Vertigo3pc also posted an image of what he says is a corrosion spot on the Cybertruck. “The spots are definitely all over the metal,” they said.

When Elon Musk announced the electric vehicle in 2019, he said the Cybertruck would be “literally bulletproof” with a “super-hard stainless steel” body.

In a September post on X, Musk said Tesla could offer owners the option of coating their cars with tungsten carbide, a ceramic material that protects against corrosion. He added that the coating is “essentially scratch resistant to anything less than diamond hardness.”

In two YouTube videos, posters claimed to have access to the Cybertruck’s owner’s manual, which Tesla has not made public. According to documents shown in the video, the EV’s stainless steel body does not have a “clear coat” applied to its exterior.

The video provides a glimpse of what appears to be an owner’s guide, which reads: “To prevent damage to the exterior, remove corrosive substances (such as grease, oil, bird droppings, tree tar, dead insects, tar spots, road salt, industrial fallout, etc.) immediately”, etc.) .

Tesla did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment outside of normal business hours.
