After months of long wait, Tesla (TSLA) has finally made its much-awaited new Model 3 available to buyers and fans based in the US and Canada at the same price.
Last year, Tesla updated its 2017 Model 3 sedan, selling it first in China this summer and then exporting it to other regions, including Europe. Dubbed the “Highland” project, Tesla aimed to reduce the Model 3’s production costs and increase the sedan’s appeal by updating the Model 3’s exterior, powertrain, and interior parts. At the time, it was reported that Tesla would reduce costs by reducing overall complexity.
Model 3 has been regularly updated with internal enhancements to mechanical components and battery materials, but this is the first major improvement. Premium Tesla models like the Model S and Model Y have already been refreshed with exterior styling, new touchscreen tablets, and yoke steering wheels.
On the surface, the refreshed Model 3 features a new streamlined front end with slimmer front headlights with new daytime running lights (DRLs) and updated rear headlights. The exterior design is otherwise similar to the current model, with other parts cut out or pushed in, but Tesla says the exterior styling has also been “optimized for maximum aerodynamics. “It has said. New wheels and two new color options are also offered.
There are even bigger enhancements under the skin. Tesla hasn’t revealed these details, but critics say the Model 3 features new suspension components and tuning that not only provide a more comfortable ride, but also make the car handle better. It has said. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has complained in the past that the Model 3 went through “production hell” during its early industrialization and development, and this new mid-cycle update is an important step for the product. This is a way to address some concerns.
Chief among those concerns is the interior, which has been criticized for being somewhat spartan in nature. Tesla said the interior features “softer, more refined” materials, as well as new seats and ambient lighting. Tesla says the new interior is quieter, thanks to what the company calls “acoustic glass” and possibly more soundproofing materials throughout.
The large central touchscreen continues to be used as the main interface for vehicle functions, but Tesla has added a second display for rear-seat passengers for entertainment purposes and rear temperature control.
The best part here, and fans will love it, is that the new Model 3 costs the same as the old one. The Model 3 rear-wheel drive costs the same $38,990 as the previous model and has the same range of 472 miles. The price of the Model 3 Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive remains at $45,990, but range on a full charge increases from 8 miles to 341 miles.
