The expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States will be held primarily on the country’s east coast, people briefed on tournament plans said. The Athletic.
Broadcasting Club World Cup matches in the Eastern time zone would benefit television viewers in Europe, home to the clubs likely to win the trophy.
Organizers decided to limit the tournament’s games to the East Coast in part because of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which was being held in the United States at the same time. FIFA and CONCACAF agreed to host the tournament to avoid stadium and logistics issues between the two tournaments. Sources said the Gold Cup on the American West Coast.
The Gold Cup, a bi-annual continental competition between North America and the Caribbean, will coincide with the Club World Cup from June 14 to July 6, 2025. One source said CONCACAF and FIFA are working together to create a “smart schedule” to make it easier for fans to enjoy both tournaments. Meanwhile, the Club World Cup begins on June 15th and ends on July 13th.
In July, CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani told reporters that Club World Cup and Gold Cup matches would not share a kick-off time, although the two competitions could overlap.
“There may be some overlap in the group stage,” Montagliani said. “[We]need to make sure we adjust the kick-off time. If we do it right, it will work. It’s up to us and FIFA to make sure it works and that the teams work well together, and I don’t know what to do. There’s no problem with that either. We’re already having those discussions.”
For Club World Cups, some exceptions may be made. For example, it would make sense for MLS’s Seattle Sounders, the 2022 CONCACAF Champions Cup winners, to play at least one game at home. Additionally, a city in Texas, located in the central time zone of the United States, could be chosen to host the Gold Cup.
As of now, 19 of the 32 teams have already qualified for the 2025 Club World Cup, and eight four-team groups will take part. Each club will play each other once, with the top two teams advancing to the single-leg finals. FIFA said in a December announcement that the revamped Club World Cup will be held every four years.
