In the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, the No. 1 Michigan Wolverines defeated the No. 2 Washington Huskies 34-13 to become the national champions.
The Wolverines led 14-3 with 2:23 left in the first quarter, but the Huskies gradually lost ground and made it a touchdown midway through the third quarter. With just over seven minutes left in the game, Michigan pulled away with a 12-yard rushing touchdown by Blake Collum.
On Washington’s next possession, Michigan intercepted Michael Penix Jr. on fourth-and-13, followed by Colm’s rushing touchdown to seal the victory.
The University of Michigan won its first-ever College Football Playoff national championship, and its first outright title since 1948 (they split the title with the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 1997). The Wolverines also finished the season with a record of 15-0 or better, just the sixth time in their history.
In addition to some of Detroit’s first team, former Wolverines Nico Collins and Jordan Lewis were among the first to congratulate Michigan after its championship-winning performance.
