LONDON (WGN) — Guinness World Records has put the title of the world’s presumed oldest dog in question, with its title on hold pending an investigation.
Bobi, 31, died in October last year in a small town in Portugal.
He is a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, a Portuguese dog breed with an average lifespan of about 10 to 14 years.
Owner Leonel Costa told The Associated Press and other media outlets that Bobbi was born on May 11, 1992, when Costa was only 8 years old. Bobbi is the oldest dog in history and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest dog ever.
However, a formal review and appeals process is underway after his title was challenged. CNN reported that doubts arose regarding evidence that “proved” his real age.
Bobbi inherited the title of oldest dog from Bluey, an Australian cattle dog who died in 1939 at the age of 29, a record he held for almost a century.
The Guinness Book of World Records told Nexstar’s WGN that the timeline for the investigation may vary, but they are trying to keep it to about three months.
In Bobi’s case, they are reviewing evidence already on file, looking for new evidence and contacting experts and people associated with the original application.
“While the investigation is ongoing, we have decided to temporarily suspend the recording of both the oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever until all findings are in place,” the spokesperson said. Ta.
