You have had success with ORION Ambulance Services and various other businesses. How do you plan to diversify your insights and share them with others? My great excitement this year comes from the opportunity to support an important group in the Houston community: local entrepreneurs. I believe a key measure of the health of a community is the success of local business owners. As a result, I launched the Texas Entrepreneurial Summit, a series of speaking seminars featuring myself and other entrepreneurs from various industries. Together, we will provide new and existing business owners with a glimpse into not only the uplifting aspects of being an entrepreneur, but also our own experiences through the betrayals of running a business. We will highlight the successes and failures we have experienced and strategies for confronting and overcoming related challenges throughout our careers.
What is the best way to develop those around you and what characterizes your leadership style? People support what they helped create. My goal is to empower each employee to bet on their own success by outlining measurable advancement paths based on their skills and interests. An essential part of this is developing your employees through consistent training so they feel confident coming into your building every day. As a leader, my obligation to influence is as much to my employees as it is to my clients.
How do you define the difference between knowledge and wisdom? For me, knowledge comes from education and training. Knowledge is something that anyone can find in a book and try to reproduce over and over again. However, wisdom comes from the implementation of knowledge in the “real world”. Knowledge is standardized to a large extent. We can all read the same chapters, attend the same lectures, and understand that 5 + 5 always equals 10. What distinguishes us from each other is that each of us has wisdom formed from our own knowledge.
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur? Nearly 30 years ago, I met someone who inspired me through his experiences and actions. This role model quickly ignited my passion and became a mentor who accompanied me as I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey. Their belief in me strengthened my belief in myself and gave me the confidence to bounce back even if I stumbled along the way. To this day, that instructor remains one of my closest friends. I know they will answer my call when I have a dilemma, a challenge, or just need a pep talk.
