HIGHGATE – The Missisquoi Valley Union Thunderbirds women’s hockey team lost 4-2 to the Burr & Burton Bulldogs on Saturday, Jan. 6, in Game 1 of the 2024 MVU Cancer Games.
Funds raised from the women’s match were donated to the Jim Bashaw Cancer and Catastrophic Fund, which provides financial support to local families during difficult times due to life-threatening illnesses.
MVU coach Katie Campbell spoke about the community’s generosity. MVU and the Franklin County community are sure to be on hand for this purpose in particular. The team were keen to raise money knowing it would go to a good cause. ”
MVU goaltender Jardin Lapin withstood the Bulldogs’ shooting onslaught in the first period, blocking 11 shots on goal.
After a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs scored their first goal of the game just 15 seconds into the second period.
Liliana Fournier scored the tying goal for the T-Birds at 1:31 of the second, off an assist from Laurie Schlierendorfer. Schlierendorfer scored the go-ahead goal at 1:51, coming out of the circle off an assist from Madisyn Spears. The Bulldogs scored the tying goal at 6:15 of the second period.
Burr & Burton had the first power play of the game at 10:05 of the period, but a T-Bird penalty kill prevented the Bulldogs from capitalizing on the opportunity. Both teams ended the second game tied at 2 points.
At 2:58 of the third, the Bulldogs scored an unassisted go-ahead goal to take a 3-2 lead.
An MVU penalty gave the Bulldogs the advantage at 5:42 of the third. Lapin made a great glove save at the start. A second T-Bird penalty shortly after gave the visiting team a two-man advantage.
After two shots bounced off the crossbar, the Bulldogs added their fourth goal at 9:59 of the third period, securing the victory. Jaydan Lapin made 24 saves for MVU, and Burr & Burton’s goaltender finished the game with 17 saves.
Campbell shared his thoughts on the Thunderbirds’ efforts.
“We came out a little flat. We’ve let other teams take over the pace this season and we’re trying not to do that. We cleaned it up and got second and third.” I fought back in the third,” Campbell said.
“Our biggest problem isn’t the gameplay. We control the zone well. Our defensive zone could use a little touch up here and there. We just don’t seem to have any luck this year. . No bounces, no great top-level goals, just garbage goals that smash the net. I think it’s frustrating because they’ve been working so hard, but I tell them, once it comes, it’s coming. I keep saying that.”
Campbell praised the contributions of several T-Birds.
“Rory joined the board today. She has shown us some great goals. She is a player who makes a lot of plays for those around her so it will be great to see her progress. I was happy. Liliana Fournier had a great game,” Campbell said.
“I think the best player on the ice for us tonight was Abby Wilcox. She’s like an energy bunny and I don’t think anyone on either team moved their feet faster than her tonight. .”
