TORONTO — A Toronto company offers special coatings designed to protect a variety of vehicles and other objects from the elements and other damage.
Jamie and Jennifer Klein of Klein’s Powder Coatings said they have applied durable powder-based coatings to a variety of vehicles and objects, from handrails to barbecue grills.
Stepping into the lobby of the new store at 606 N. Fourth St., you’ll find red, silver and blue park benches, bright red antique parking meters, two of the many restored items filling the interior. You will notice some long shelves. Different colors of coatings available.
Available in North America since the 1960s, powder coating consists of hardeners, pigments, and other materials mixed into a homogeneous flour-like powder that is applied to the object with an electrostatic spray gun. I am.
After heating in a large oven, the coating is highly resistant to scratches, chips, abrasion, corrosion, fading, and other abrasion issues common with liquid paints, Jennifer says.
“It’s 10 times more durable than regular paint.” Jamie said.
The two use this coating on metal elements of various types of all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and other vehicles, from truck frames and race car chassis to wheels and fenders, as well as metal handrails and barbecue grills. It has been applied to fire pits, pit grates, and outdoor decorations. .
“I also made a lot of antiques.” Jamie showed visitors two antique metal school desks containing inkwells they were working on.
When asked about the oldest item he renovated, he said: “A barber’s chair from the late 1800s. It was polished nickel and porcelain.”
Jamie said that the porcelain yellows over time, but they were able to hide it with powder coating.
“After doing a lot of research, I found a color that matched[the original].” He said.
According to Jamie, many car owners like to paint their wheels a different color to help them stand out from other cars.
He added that he buys coatings from several vendors, including one that offers up to 7,500 hues.
Before Jamie started his business with Jennifer, “Shade Tree Mechanic” People who like car repair and detailing.
“I was just painting on my own and was tired of the paint not lasting as long.” He added that he wanted to try powder coating after watching a TV show that demonstrated powder coating.
At first he worked with a small gun, but a friend asked him to coat his wheels and word of his skills spread to others.
“It just snowballed.” Jamie said such projects were a side hustle while working as a mechanic in the gas and oil industry.
He and Jennifer realized they were doing that work in the evenings and on weekends after work, so they decided to set up shop near Dyer Country Club.
Jamie said after adding on three times, they realized it was time to look for a new location.
Both had ties to Toronto. Jennifer graduated from Toronto High School in 2004 and her family owned her bar in Gem City for many years. Meanwhile, Jamie, who graduated from Edison High School in 1994, has grandparents who live there.
Jamie said they first approached the city’s Planning Commission with blueprints for a 5,000-square-foot building to be built on the vacant lot.
He said the zoning made it possible for the business to be established, but city commission members were concerned about it being aesthetically consistent with the adjacent residences.
Jamie said the construction itself is under the jurisdiction of the Ohio Department of Commerce, and state-certified contractors were used to follow its guidelines.
He said he and Jennifer were able to do some of the work, such as painting, with the help of many family members.
They enjoy doing business in Toronto and said some of their customers come from as far away as Dayton, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, and are happy to direct them to local restaurants.
The Kleins have coated railings at places such as UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Traveling Museum of Pittsburgh, and said they like to support local churches and nonprofits whenever possible.
Jennifer helps Jamie with administrative duties at the store and said they both enjoy their jobs.
“Seeing the faces on people’s faces when they come pick up their items is really rewarding.” she said.
