Toyota announced Tuesday it will invest $1.3 billion in its flagship plant in Kentucky for future electrification efforts, including assembling an all-new three-row battery electric SUV for the U.S. market.
The project brings the total plant investment to nearly $10 billion and strengthens Toyota’s commitment to high-quality vehicles and long-term job security.
This investment will support previously announced future BEV assembly at Toyota Kentucky. A battery pack assembly line will also be added to the facility, with batteries supplied by Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina.
“You can’t think of the Bluegrass region and Scott County without thinking of Toyota,” said Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. “We are grateful that they continue to invest in the commonwealth and continue to set the standard for high-quality, good-paying jobs for our people. Toyota Motor Corporation, another billion to Kentucky Thank you for investing more than a dollar.”
Toyota Kentucky has been the center of the automaker’s North American operations since 1986. Approximately 9,400 team members have assembled some of the most beloved nameplates in Toyota’s lineup, including the Camry, America’s best-selling passenger car for 22 consecutive years.
“Today’s announcement reflects our commitment to electrifying our vehicles and further reinvesting in our U.S. operations,” said Toyota Kentucky President Kelly Creech. “Our team members have worked together for generations to prepare for this occasion. We remain true to who we are as a company and will continue to put our employees first for generations to come. We will continue to think ahead and lead the way into the future.”
Toyota is also committed to investing in its business community, primarily focusing on education and workforce development. Since making our home in Kentucky nearly 40 years ago, more than $154 million in local donations continues to make a significant impact in the Bluegrass State. Our partnerships and support for 48 education and workforce training initiatives in 2023 alone have helped strengthen our foundation for the future.
“Every investment Toyota makes is evidence of our commitment to our people,” said Chris Coheria, Toyota Kentucky group leader. “I joined this company 26 years ago as a member of the production team. The job security, competitive pay, and growth opportunities are all reasons I love working here. I’m also excited to be part of the team developing Toyota’s first battery electric vehicle in North America.”
Toyota announced new investments totaling $17 billion in its U.S. manufacturing operations starting in 2021 to support its electrification efforts. The increase in BEV assembly in North America advances Toyota’s portfolio approach to electrification and efforts to build its customer base.
