EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – El Pasoan Tre Fierro is in his fourth season competing in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, competing against the best dirt bike riders in the world.
“This is special because this series has a lot of people racing from all over the world. This is the Supercross World Series and they know a lot of the riders are from other countries. , they want to compete because they know this is the pinnacle of the sport,” Fierro said.
KTSM once again caught up with Fierro as he competed in Round 3 of the 2024 Supercross Championship in San Diego.
The Supercross Championship is divided into several rounds, held at outdoor stadiums and domes across the country until the final championship round.
Although Fierro and his team are supported by local sponsors, they remain the underdogs in a David vs. Goliath battle against the bigger and better-funded factory teams such as Honda, Red Bull and Rockstar.
“One of the most difficult things is getting a competitive bike, because obviously the budget is bigger and there’s more research and development into more exotic parts and bikes,” Fierro said.
Fierro competes in the 250 class as a young prospect. It’s a dream for a driver like him to one day compete in the 450 class at the top of his game and be sponsored by a bigger factory team.
Each class has a final race at the end of the night called the Main Event. After three separate qualifying rounds, only 22 riders will advance to the event. For drivers like Fierro, making it to the main event is both a challenge and a measure of progress.
Fierro is one of only two El Pasoans to qualify for the main event of a Supercross round in the 50-year history of the AMA Supercross Championship, achieving this feat twice He said he was doing it.
Now in his fourth year, Fierro still wears number 158, but his goal is to rank among the top 100 drivers this year so he can reach double digits next year.
“The next goal is to get a national number. Those of you who are already in these races are the best of the best. But it’s just a matter of the next small step I can take to get to the top of the sport. I think it’s something like that,” Fierro said.
Fierro heads to Anaheim, Calif., next weekend for the fourth round of the championship. His goal is to qualify for the next main event and move one step closer to reaching double digits.
