Tour guide Adam Smith first noticed the tree was gone on January 26th (KOIN)
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The centerpiece of the world’s smallest park went missing, and now it’s finally back.
Mill Ends Park In the center of Naito Parkway was a lone tree standing firm in the eroding concrete. But two weeks ago, the tree disappeared.
Adam Smith, a Portland resident and local tour guide, told KOIN 6 News that he noticed the tree was missing while on a tour.
“I was touring the city on January 26th and was setting up the park before showing guests around, but when I got there there was no bush, just a small, desolate ring of dirt.” said Smith.
Smith called Portland Parks and Recreation spokesperson Mark Ross and asked about the missing plants. Smith said Ross told him the tree must have been stolen again.
Ross confirmed that the trees were gone, but joked that there was no need to worry as the entire park was being replanted.
Ross said he plans to plant dwarf Alberta spruce trees in the world’s smallest park in the near future.
Something similar happened a few years ago when the original tree at Mill Ends Park was stolen, but then the tree was mysteriously returned and someone gave them a check for $3.25 for the mystery tree. said Ross.
The original tree was replanted in an undisclosed location, where Ross said it still lives.
