Ukraine’s military spy chief wants Canada to provide retired rockets to replenish dwindling arms supplies.
“We need many types of equipment: ammunition, munitions in general, artillery ammunition,” Kirillo Budanov told Canadian outlet Global News in a report published on Monday.
Budanov, head of Ukraine’s military intelligence service, has set his sights on Canada’s retired CRV7 ground attack rocket.
A spokesperson for the Canadian Forces confirmed to Global News that the country has 83,303 CRV-7 rockets awaiting disposal.
However, Canada has not yet handed over the rocket due to concerns about the safety and stability of the decades-old CRV7.
Bill Blair, representative of Canada’s Minister of Defence, told Global News that the CRV7 must be ensured “that it is operationally effective and safe for delivery to Ukraine before it is delivered.”
“We have no concerns,” Budanov said in response to Canadian concerns.
Ukrainians are not the only ones suffering from arms shortages. Their enemy, Russia, had to rely on North Korea for missile launchers and ballistic missiles.
Ukraine has relied heavily on Western support in its war effort. The United States has provided more than $43 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in February 2022.
Representatives for the Canadian Defense Force did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment outside of normal business hours.
