‘We’ve never seen anything like this before’: More reports of Molotov cocktails used in attacks and protests at Russian polling stations
There have been reports of attacks and vandalism at some polling stations across Russia in what appears to be a protest against President Vladimir Putin’s seemingly inevitable victory.
The video below shows a voter burning a ballot with the words “bring my husband back” written on it, an apparent reference to the war that followed the invasion of Ukraine.
The video was posted below a post on Mash, a popular digital news platform.
Meanwhile, another video showed a woman attempting to set a ballot box on fire with a Molotov cocktail in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug in the West Siberian region.
According to the local election commission, the woman was arrested and the fire was extinguished, with no injuries or injuries.
Stanislav Andreychuk of the voters’ rights movement Golos described the development as “a new feature of this election.”
He said there were reports from multiple regions of voters pouring dye into ballot boxes and Molotov cocktails being used to damage them.
“Nothing like this has ever happened before, and this is probably the result of a lot of tension and aggression that has arisen in society, for which the Russian authorities are directly responsible.”
But Andreychuk said what the protesters were doing was wrong: “They are doing the same thing as the commission tamperers. They are stealing the votes of voters who have already cast their votes in the ballot box. It’s stealing,” he said.
“However, unlike those tampered with by the election commission or the government, they (the vandals) will receive real (prison) sentences.”
