An alumnus who co-founded a health care company that provides primary care, multispecialty and acute care options to 1.6 million patients across the United States has been awarded Cornell University’s highest honor, Entrepreneurship.
VillageMD Chairman and CEO Tim Barry ’93 has been named the 2024 Cornell Entrepreneur of the Year. He will be honored on campus at Cornell University’s Entrepreneur Celebration Event on April 11th and he will speak at Cornell University’s Eclectic His Convergence Conference on November 15th. Barry founded VillageMD in 2013 with the belief that technology, population insights, and a network of specialized medical professionals could be leveraged to deliver higher quality care, better patient outcomes, and lower total costs. did.
VillageMD provides care through Village Medical, Summit Health and CityMD, the company’s urgent care service in the New York and New Jersey area, and employs 20,000 people. The company has hundreds of practice locations in markets across the United States, including Texas, Arizona, Georgia and Michigan. VillageMD also operates Village Medical at Walgreens clinics, which provide full-service, comprehensive primary care.
“Tim Barry is the quintessential Cornell University Entrepreneur of the Year,” said Cornell Entrepreneurship Director Zach Schulman ’87, JD ’90. “VillageMD was founded to solve some of the most vexing problems in healthcare. Its growth has been driven by entrepreneurs uncovering pain points and presenting innovative solutions and sustained momentum. It symbolizes what happens when you do that.”
Barry has spent his career creating solutions that support healthcare providers and their patients, including managing independent physician associations, Medicare Advantage plans, and population health operations. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He also holds a graduate degree from Michigan State University.
“When I got the call from Zach, I was so touched,” Barry said. “As someone who grew up in a small town in Wisconsin and then had the opportunity to attend Cornell University, there is no doubt that my Cornell experience opened my eyes to the art of the possible. It led him to become an entrepreneur.”
Barry started his first company in his 20s and invested all his savings and time into the idea, which failed. Thankfully, he said his wife saw this failure as a learning experience and encouraged him to continue trying new ventures on the side while still working for a large company.
“I feel that the U.S. health care system as a whole is failing Americans, and they deserve better,” he said. Eleven years later, “we have made a quantifiable impact on the lives of millions of people, but there is still more work to do.”
In 2023, Barry was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Modern Healthcare. Village Medical’s “New Way to Well” campaign aimed at patients, especially the elderly, earned her the Ad Age Healthcare Marketing Impact Award and TITAN Health Award in 2023.
