Following the release of the results of a WalletHub study that analyzed each state based on return on investment (ROI) for taxpayers, the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance ranks Massachusetts as the 9th worst state in the country. “Anyone paying attention to the rapid expansion of the national budget and the capricious handling of our hard-earned tax dollars by our legislators knew we would be ranked low. This is happening behind closed doors, with constant delays and little oversight, and the amount we spend is increasing at an unsustainable rate. A no-bid contract signed by the state costs $64 per person per day just to feed immigrants who cross the border to Massachusetts seeking generous benefits. This is perhaps best illustrated by New England’s deep roots in New England: That’s $92,000 a year just to feed a family of four, an amount the Commonwealth could use to hire a personal chef for each family. “Even the popular state of Connecticut fared better than Massachusetts in the rankings,” said Paul D. Craney, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance.
“Our low ranking in this taxpayer ROI study is just a reflection of our overall lack of competitiveness on a regional and national level. It’s no surprise that the top two states, New Hampshire and Florida, are also the top two states where taxpayers get the most bang for their buck. Massachusetts has actually regained some economic competitiveness. If we want to do that, we need to get serious about reducing or eliminating taxes, and we need to get serious about making sure our residents get a return on their tax dollars.The best way to do that is to: Stop wasting money on frivolous expenses,” Craney concluded.
