The Center for Entrepreneurship at Washtenaw Community College is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the introduction of three new categories in its annual report. Pitch@WCC competition. The new category recognizes early-stage business owners in the arts and skilled trades, as well as businesses owned by returning nationals.
Pitch@WCC invites early-stage business owners to submit short videos explaining their business. Finalists selected in seven categories will receive coaching from the Entrepreneurship Center before participating in a final pitch competition in May.
Finalists will receive coaching in both one-on-one and group sessions. Michel Jouret, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship, says group sessions are especially valuable because they allow participants to hear about their colleagues’ businesses “hopefully while they’re off work.”
Additionally, all finalists will be automatically accepted into the Entrepreneurship Center’s new incubator program. This program is a two-year “walking” program. [participants] “Through every stage of building a business,” Jure said. Incubator His program also offers mentorship, training, and other resources.
Jure encourages all interested parties to apply to Pitch@WCC and contact staff for guidance. Entrepreneurship Center staff are not involved in judging the competition, so “we’re there to help everyone who comes to our location,” Jure said.
No prior business experience or training is required, and anyone local to the Washtenaw County area who has never won a contest before is eligible to participate.
“We really want people to use our services,” Julette says.
She gives participants the following advice: “Put your fears aside and persevere. Think big, but focus on the problem your business is solving and why you are uniquely positioned to solve that problem.”
