Virginia is spending hundreds of millions of state funds to help school districts launch intensive tutoring for students who did poorly on state assessments last year.
As part of a larger “ALL in VA” education plan, Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) aims to recover from learning loss caused by the pandemic and improve scores on the state’s annual assessment, Standards of Learning. , announced initiatives for individual instruction in September. The plan allocates more than $400 million in state funding to school districts to support tutoring, literacy, chronic absenteeism, and more.
The plan recommends dedicating 70% of the funding to tutoring, and the state estimates that hundreds of thousands of students would be eligible for tutoring.
Yonkin originally called for the district to begin tutoring services by mid-October, about six weeks after announcing the plan, but school leaders and education experts questioned that timeline at the time. was. By Oct. 16, the state Department of Education had approved only four funding plans.
The department approved plans for all 131 state departments in December. Each school district has taken a slightly different approach to rolling out tutoring programs. Some school districts already have intervention plans in place and are working to expand services. Other districts are starting tutoring programs from scratch. Several I haven’t started tutoring yet.
